Returning to Coherence

Boundaries, Energy and Self-Regulation in Daily Life.

Much of modern life is, quietly,

dysregulating.

Constant input.

Noise.

Screens.

Interactions.

Expectations.

For some, this is manageable.

For others, it creates a kind of internal overwhelm that builds over time.

A sense of being scattered. Drained.

Out of sync with yourself.

I began to notice this more and more clearly

as I deepened my work with tantra.

Not just in sessions,

but in everyday life.

How certain environments left me feeling open and calm.

And others left me feeling depleted,

or overstimulated,

or needing to withdraw completely.

At times, the after-effect felt like a kind of hangover —

not from substances,

but from too much input.

What I came to understand

is that my system was responding to coherence…

or the lack of it.

What is coherence?

A state of internal alignment.

Where your body, mind and nervous system

are working together,

rather than in conflict.

It feels like:

calm

clarity

groundedness

A sense that you are with yourself.

Many things in life pull us out of this state.

Stress.

Emotional triggers.

Too much stimulation.

Too many interactions without space to process.

And so, over time,

we can find ourselves living in a state

that is slightly — or sometimes deeply — dysregulated.

The question becomes:

How do we return?

For me, part of the answer has been

learning to work with boundaries.

Not as something rigid.

Not as a way of shutting the world out.

But as a way of supporting my system.

Sometimes that means creating space.

Less social interaction.

Time away from screens.

Quiet.

Solitude.

Sometimes it means choosing regulating activities —

walking in nature,

movement,

creative expression,

rest.

These are not luxuries.

They are ways of restoring coherence.

There have also been times

when I have worked more consciously

with what we might call energetic boundaries.

Using intention and visualisation

to create a sense of containment.

The key has been learning

that this is not about avoiding life.

It is about responding to it.

Understanding what my system needs in each moment,

and allowing that to guide my choices.

I have found it helpful to notice patterns.

Which environments feel nourishing?

Which feel draining?

Which interactions leave me feeling open?

Which leave me needing to recover?

This kind of awareness creates choice.

Over time, this becomes more intuitive.

Less about rules, and more about relationship.

Building a relationship with your own system.

It is about learning to return, again and again, to a state of coherence.

To yourself.

In Practice

One of the gifts of tantra is that it teaches us to notice.

Not just the obvious things,

but the subtle signals that arise within us before we override them.

The tightening in the chest.

The holding of the breath.

The moment we say "yes" when we mean "no".

The pull to withdraw.

The desire to move closer.

Many of us have learned to push through discomfort,

to force ourselves to cope,

to ignore what our body is telling us,

or to assume that our needs are less important than the expectations placed upon us.

Over time, this creates a disconnect between what is true and what we act upon.

Tantra invites us to reverse this process.

It offers a space where we can slow down enough to notice what is actually happening within us.

To become aware of our sensations,

our emotions,

our desires,

our boundaries,

and our impulses.

And from that awareness, to make conscious choices.

Not choices based on habit, conditioning, or obligation,

but choices rooted in what is genuinely true for us in this moment.

This is a skill.

Like any skill, it becomes stronger with practice.

The more we learn to recognise coherence within ourselves,

the easier it becomes to return to it when life pulls us away.

Over time, this capacity ripples out into every area of life.

Relationships

Work

Decision making

We become less reactive, more discerning,

and more able to respond to life from a place of alignment rather than survival.

This is one of the reasons that my work has gradually evolved towards

Self Sovereignty.

Because before we can know what is right for us,

we first need to be able to hear ourselves clearly.

And coherence is often where that journey begins.
